01 Intro
2020 has undoubtedly been a year of unprecedented challenges, with the global COVID-19 pandemic reshaping our lives in ways we never anticipated. In an effort to document and reflect on this transformative period, I present to you a collection of photographs that capture the profound impact of the pandemic on our communities, focusing on School & Parks and Retail.
As the graduating class of high school faced an unexpected disruption to their celebrations, my former high school, Central Valley, found a unique way to honor its seniors. Names of all the graduates were inscribed on the football field, serving as a touching tribute to the missed milestones of the school year. Similarly, other institutions, like Roger's, displayed messages of encouragement such as "SPOKANE WE GOT THIS."
Parks, once vibrant hubs of activity, became shrouded in caution tape, symbolizing the necessary measures taken to discourage children from playing on playground equipment. The scenes of emptiness and desolation in these areas aim to underscore the importance of social distancing and the challenges posed by loneliness during quarantine.
The retail landscape underwent significant transformations, with stores adapting to new operational norms. Grocery stores faced shortages of essential items like toilet paper, bleach, and hand sanitizer in the early stages of the pandemic. Meanwhile, establishments like Apple temporarily closed as they were deemed nonessential. Some businesses, unfortunately, faced permanent closure, such as Chronic Tacos – a personal favorite of mine.
In this photographic series, I employ the use of empty spaces to convey the significance of social distancing and the isolation experienced during quarantine. As I navigated through months of self-isolation, refraining from social interactions to protect myself and loved ones, I delved into a profound sense of loneliness and boredom. The moments captured in these photos represent my attempt to navigate this unique period with caution and reflection, always prioritizing the safety of those around me.
I invite you to explore this collection and contemplate the shared experiences that define this extraordinary chapter in our lives.
